Windowpane

Poás, Alajuela, Costa Rica

2021

Perched in the misty highlands of Costa Rica’s central mountain range, Windowpane emerges from the volcanic landscape as a sculptural presence. This concrete residence, cloaked in deep black finishes, is designed to absorb warmth from the sun while embracing the raw beauty and atmospheric moods of the surrounding forested peaks.

The house’s dark palette is not just aesthetic—it's functional. In the cool, often damp climate of the mountains, black finishes help capture and retain solar heat, subtly warming the thick concrete mass. Exposed concrete walls provide thermal mass to regulate interior temperatures, storing heat by day and releasing it at night. Matte black steel, charred wood accents, and textured stone complement the monolithic feel while enhancing insulation and longevity.

Song: Windowpane - Opeth

The house’s dark palette is not just aesthetic

It's functional.

Windowpane stands as a bold yet quiet conversation with its environment—solid, grounded, and introspective. It’s a response to cold with comfort, to darkness with warmth, and to the mountain’s power with architectural humility.

The design revolves around inward-facing courtyards and large glazing that frames views of the misty forest and distant ridgelines. Interiors are defined by warm lighting, natural materials, and an earthy palette that balances the dramatic exterior. Skylights and large windows ensure natural light softens the dark materials, avoiding a cave-like feel while maintaining a cozy atmosphere.
