Temprano
El Coco, Guanacaste
2021
In the sun-drenched, arid terrain of Guanacaste, Costa Rica, Temprano reimagines sustainable living through modular innovation. This contemporary residence is crafted from repurposed shipping containers, offering a bold architectural statement that balances environmental consciousness with minimalist elegance.
The design centers on adaptability, climate response, and ecological footprint. With inspiration drawn from the region's natural resilience and simplicity, the project celebrates clean geometry and material honesty. Each container is positioned to harness cross-ventilation and natural shading, forming an airy, livable sanctuary despite the harsh climate.

Minimized land disturbance.
White was chosen as the primary exterior finish—not just for its aesthetic purity, but for its functionality. In the relentless Costa Rican sun, the reflective surface helps reduce heat absorption, keeping interior temperatures significantly cooler without over-reliance on mechanical cooling systems. The use of steel containers ensures durability, while high-performance insulation and strategically placed apertures work to moderate indoor comfort.
Beyond its recycled core, Temprano integrates sustainable technologies and passive design strategies. Native vegetation surrounds the home, aiding in erosion control and temperature moderation. Materials were sourced locally where possible, and construction minimized land disturbance.
